Virtual interviewing is the new norm in 2020 and will continue into 2021. Whether you are formally interviewing for a new position at a new company or working for a promotion, you need to make sure you are communicating credibility and confidence via Zoom.

Your outfit shows:

  1. Credibility: wear an outfit that aligns with the corporate vision, culture and environment.
For example, if you are interviewing with a creative tech agency, you need to reflect the firm’s culture with your outfit. This might translate into a trendy collared shirt and jacket (ie. skip the tie) for a man and a fun sweater with stylish earrings for a woman. A formal suit would communicate that you are irrelevant, out-of-touch and not a good fit for the firm.
  2. Confidence: wear an outift that empowers you (caveat: it needs to be comfortable and not distracting to the interviewer) and visually supports your experience and persona. You want to communicate that you are the best person for the position. Leverage your interview attire as a significant non-verbal communication to complement and bolster your resume.
