First Impressions and the Pandemic!

The pandemic has changed how people get their jobs and this includes the interviewing process.  Many recruiters and HR specialists are conducting interviews 100% virtually.  Just because some of the interview tactics are changed does not mean that everything has changed.

First impressions still count.

Within the first few seconds of meeting someone (virtually or in person), an interviewer is quickly and subconsciously processing many things about the interviewee.

The interviewer is quickly determining a person’s:

  • Credibility
  • Culture fit
  • Commitment
  • Energy level
  • Seniority

It is critical that the interviewee is intentional about the non-verbal message she/he is sending to this potential employer.

  • Treat the virtual interview as seriously as you would an in-person interview.
  • Realize that it can be more challenging to communicate virtually than in-person since subtle cues like facial expressions may not be noticed as easily on a computer screen as in-person.
  • Take advantage of this opportunity to communicate credibility and confidence.

In the Wall Street Journal’s The New Rules for Landing a Job in the Covid Era, “its ok to be the most dressed up person on the call.”
